The Electrifying Electricity
Posted by admin under Electricity
Most of the things that we enjoy today are possible because of electricity. Name it, radio, television, computer and many more. All of this is made to run by electricity being supplied right to our homes.
Stop, and think, how would our lives be different if there was no electricity? We would probably be living in a very dark and silent world, one that is boring.
Where does electricity come from?
How does it reach us?
Electricity comes from huge generators in power stations turned by turbines driven round by a force of water or high pressure steam depending on the source.
Each generator has a ring of copper coil round the outside. Inside this huge magnet are turned by a shaft from a turbine. As the magnet rotate, they make electrons move in the coils. The current flows backwards and forwards at first, one end of the magnet and other sweeps post. Current which flows like this is called alternating current. The generators are known as alternators.
At the power station, electricity from the generator passes along thick cables to a transformer. These transformers are the one we see on the electric post that are as big as drums with wires or cables attached to them. Here, the power is stepped up before the power is fed to the transmission lines which carry it across the city.
Power from the transmission lines goes to the substations. Here the voltage is stepped down by the transformers; the lines divided to go to smaller substations- and so on.
Where the cables come into your house, you will find these things, main switch, a main fuse and the electric meter. And the electricity fed to your appliances.
So think first on how electricity produce before you will use it.
